Feature ranking

So I've been giving some thought to how a secondary interest-metric might work. While the UX of the "Super Like" was terrible, I think the original intent of the system had merit. I strongly disagree with the UserVoice voting model:

I've thought of a different approach to gaining insight on feature priority:

Feature ranking

This change would add a ranking to your personal votes list once you've voted on 2 or more items:

To change the priority of an item, simply drag it up or down in the list (see the arrow).

This would be interesting data. Let's say you can see "avg ranking" next to the vote count in the topic view. Example:

  • Steam Login
    500 votes
    avg ranking: #21

  • GitLab Login:
    220 votes
    avg ranking: #2

More people are showing interest in "Steam Login", but almost everyone who wants the "GitLab Login" really wants it.

All your items have ranking:null until you've reordered an item for the first time.

Bulk change categories without logging edit

@jomaxro wrote:

Long story short: the Discourse I'm currently working on is quite old. Further, it was primarily run by people who did not understand Discourse, and so many things were deleted, unlisted, moved, etc. that shouldn't have been, and are now causing complications.

I want to "fix" the broken categories - mostly those with deleted/unpinned description topics. I'm looking to do the following:

  1. Rename broken category.
  2. Create a new category.
  3. Recategorize all topics from broken category to new category.
  4. Delete broken category.
  5. Repeat until all broken categories are deleted.

Which leads me to:

  1. Can I bulk recategorize topics without causing it to be logged? I don't want most topics on the site to have an edit, nor do I have time to hide the revision for 1,000+ topics.
  2. Is there a better way to fix old "broken" categories?

hey guys,

how do i make this dissappear without fullfilling its requirements (5 topics, 50 users..etc)?

it would be nice to have this message removed.

but how?

we are using discourse internally for the company and we are quite small yet. so most of us are admins/mods...

it would be nice to have it removed.
since three months we have this blue header now... it´s telling us nothing new..
and we keep wondering...
will it ever go away. sure it will. but the forum is not yet for the public, and won´t be for at least another two months.

regards,

Patrick

ps: feel free to edit the title, category and tags. i´m quite new to the meta.discourse so i don´t know the right categorys, tags yet..

This is related to a similar issue that has been fixed, but probably only if quoting happend after flagging.

Example case:
flagged post: https://forums.sketchup.com/t/suggested-improvements-to-learn-sketchup/41228/4
quoted as first quote in this post: https://forums.sketchup.com/t/suggested-improvements-to-learn-sketchup/41228/10

Blank pages every now and then

Hey all. I've been running Discourse for a small community for a few weeks now, and I must say, it's brilliant.
I've experienced something wierd. Every now and then, the browser page remains white. Refreshing several times doesn't help, it seems the page will remain white for a few seconds, no matter how many times you refresh. Then, all of a sudden it's all back to normal.

I've checked the error logs, and I see these kinds of errors:

I've checked, I'm up to date, and it's been happening ever since I first set up the Discourse. I have the feeling it happens on first load for returning visitors; I can reproduce the error easier when loading the page when not logged in, but could also just be a coincidence. I had some warnings about swap when rebuilding, I have since addressed them, so that should be fine. Anything in particular I should look into? I'm kind of at a loss as to where I should begin troubleshooting :smiley:
Any help is appreciated.

How to create additional page under "About"

I want to create an additional page inside the about page, including a new menu link on the top.

like

"https://meta.discourse.org/faq"
"https://meta.discourse.org/TOS"

"https://meta.discourse.org/mynewpage"

I want it to work just like faq and tos, where the content is linked from topics inside the staff category. I planned to add this for a disclaimer page.

Is there any simple way to do this? Or if it needs plugin, would you please help me to show me the right direction to create one.

Thanks..!!!:smiley:

Email Feature Stopped Working?

@ATPJD wrote:

We are using the hosted Discourse service for airlinepilot.life. One of our admins sent me the following email:

Typically the forum has a feature that if one is subscribed to the mailings an email is generated every time somebody posts. When I receive these emails I am able to respond to the email, which them propagates my response back into the forum. I have used this since we started the new forum and have never had any issues with it.

Today my responses stopped propagating. I had been using my @allatps.com address, so I switched to my personal @gmail address with no luck. My email addresses are functioning fine in other capacities, so it must be the forum that is not handling the incoming email correctly. I have tried responding from my Blackberry, iphone and Apple laptop. Yarden has had the same issue.

The ability to respond to an email and have it propagate is one of the ways that we are able to respond so quickly. I have dug around and cannot find where any settings have changed. Do you have any insight into how best to handle this?

Has anyone succeeded in using discourse as sso provider for nextcloud? Share recipe?

@tobiaseigen wrote:

Hi all - I am interested in setting up a few small community sites with discourse plus nextcloud for document and media content sharing. It would be loverly and preferable to have SSO with discourse as SSO provider. If anyone has succeeded in doing this and can share a recipe here on how to do it I'd appreciate it. Thanks! :seedling:

The communities I am looking at creating are for my own geographically dispersed family, my neighborhood, and my son's school.

I might also be interested in setting up a nextcloud for the organization I work for that already has an active community website. Though my organization's community uses discourse, it uses wordpress as SSO auth now. Down the pike I'm also interested in flipping that around so we can benefit from features reliant on discourse as SSO auth.

Edit: this seems to be the page - I will be exploring this today and will let others know what I come up with if anything. :slight_smile: Any guidance along the way much appreciated.

Hey guys, I was wondering if there is a way of managing CSS/HTML customization via API. This means to fetch/update items here: admin/customize/css_html/

I've read this and didn't had too much luck:

  • GETting this in POSTMAN {{base_url}}/admin/site_customizations/22?api_key={{api_key}}&api_username={{api_username}} returns nothing;
  • GETting this in POSTMAN {{base_url}}/admin/site_customizations/ will return Oops! That page doesn’t exist or is private.

Thanks!

Onebox prevents new user posting due to too many links

@Blaisorblade wrote:

I just tried to post a message with a link to GitHub on a Discourse forum I just joined. And I was told "Sorry, new users can only put 2 links in a post."

I can put at most 2 links in a post as a new user. This happens also if I put one link—it's as if links were counted after onebox expansion. This is similar but not identical to the fixed bug https://meta.discourse.org/t/onebox-prevents-new-user-posting-due-to-multiple-preview-images/46413, which was about the image limit — any chance the link limit was forgot?

For reference, the actual post was https://users.scala-lang.org/t/merging-scala-maps-efficiently/210/3?u=blaisorblade — I was kept from linking to https://github.com/inc-lc/ilc-scala/blob/9a158ae7757eab62b91ef2fd2196adda810f6ad5/src/main/scala/ilc/feature/bags/Library.scala#L11-L37 (removing the other link in that post did not help).

In my plugin, I am saving the custom field to the discourse topic when it is created
I am able to save save the custom field, but I am not able to figure out why it is throwing above error when editing the topic. Am I missing something, do I have to handle edit scenarios?

I was also going through discourse-tagging plugin, and here they are checking if the tags are present or not. Do I have to do something similar?

Hi,

I am having issues with adsense as google adsense is not accepting subdomain of discourse. and I was informed that discourse works better on a subdomain. So now i get rejected as my domain example.com is blank, and my actual forum is subdomain.example.com.

So, can anyone give me suggestion to fix this issue? or I need to move the forum or reinstall to example.com?

So, may someone explain exact meaning of the "Dismiss" button? I strive to find the best translation.

Is dismissing a temporary or forever action? Will the dismissed notification ever become active again?

P.S. Translating/reviewing strings with the keys that start with js.topics.bulk.
