Is it possible to sync Discourse responses with Medium blog comments?

Recently released our company's first Discourse project, forum.dice.fm. Was curious if 1) Is it possible to sync the forum so blogs automatically post within a category? 2) Is it possible to sync Forum & Medium comments via Embed.ly?

Also, is this a good/regular thing to do?

What happens when custom plugins are official integrated in discourse?

@RBoy wrote:

I was going through the various plugins and found the solved plugin very cool. I also read from @sam that this was going to be an official release plugin (thanks WD).

Currently the only way to get the plugin is customize app.yml to include the plugin as a custom plugin from github. So when you rebuild it downloads the plugin.

So I'm wondering what happens when the plugin is official released? Will the custom plugin conflict with the official plugin? Will the rebuild fail (assuming not), do we need to remove the entries from the yml file or will the custom plugin co exist with the official plugin (how will that work?)?

I deleted a post and then a reply to that post manually. Now I'd like to recover the reply only. Is this possible? I don't see the options from the topic admin menu, if i select the reply, or if I go to the profile page of the user whose reply was deleted.

Thanks!

Surface data about users with too many bounces

New about bot page

@SidV wrote:

I was playing a bit with the bot, to debug it and get better translations in Spanish, and when the bot does not understand something, it gives us a message that sends us to speak with someone "real" but it directs us to /about page of the site. There we have no way of talking to anyone, and there isn't any information about the bot itself.

So an idea hit my head: we could create a page "/about-the-bot" (or something like that).
With its version, the commands that it accepts, and that page could be editable by the user as it is for example /faq or /guidelines

So each of us could write what they wanted there, and if we want, we can put a new topic for people to say what they think of the bot, and so on.

While writing this idea, it occurred to me that I could edit the /guidelines to add a whole paragraph about the bot, and put the link /guidelines#bot from the lines that our discobot says when he don't understand the people and so they could understand it better.

Everything is for the correct communication of discobot. :allthethings:

Resetting the bounce count doesn't remove people from the bounced list

While looking at this bounce issue, I see that clicking "reset bounce count" does reset the user, but they remain at /admin/users/list/bounced

As a bonus bug, the title isn't showing properly (I'm on latest tests-passed as of 1 hour ago)

PS Why is discobot there at all? its got a bounce score of 0 and hasn't been emailed....

EDIT I was looking at /admin/users/list/bounced not /admin/email/bounced

It doesn't look like it's possible to check a user's exact read time? Currently it only shows minutes, days, months, etc.

What about, when hovering over the read time on a user's profile, it shows their exact read time, like 8d, 2h, 38m, for example?

Add bounce count to the user export?

I'm trying to figure out which of the 100 users in our bounce list are actually marked as bouncing, but the value isn't in the user export csv.

If it were added, this job would be easier. I don't know if it should be a boolean value, or the current bounce count (for which i think 4 == bouncing)

[PAID] Import/convert from generic mySQL DB

Import forums, topics, users, and messages from a long-dead forum.

When do you need it done?
Next few weeks.

What is your budget, in $ USD that you can offer for this task?
$400

I have data from an old forum based on "WebBoard" software which has hasn't been functional for many years and I'd like to get it imported into Discourse. I will later convert an active phpBB2 forum and combine with this (but that is not part of this request).

The old forum data is in a 20 MB mySQL database, in 3 tables:
- forums (19)
- users (734)
- posts (31,074)

Table structures look like this:

forums
  ForumID
  ForumName

users
  UserID
  UserName
  FirstName
  LastName
  UserEmail

posts
  MsgID
  ForumID
  UserID
  TopicID
  TopicTitle
  PostDate (format: 1999-06-29 09:15:50)
  Body

Many of the users' email addresses are bad since the forum is old, so I'm not sure what would be the best way to handle that. If the users are deactivated but posts retain the user's real name, I'd be OK with that.

Messages are grouped by TopicID, and are in order based on the PostDate. There is no threading, all replies are in sequence.

There is no need to redirect any links or fix formatting of content.

Daemonite Material Theme

@modius wrote:

The Daemonites have released a brand new, native theme for the Discourse forum based on the Google Material design guidelines.

As Flash as a Rat with a Gold Tooth

There's a lot of effort in Materializing a design that didn't start out that way. We're happy with the result.

Topic Preview Plugin Support

Colourful Sub-Categories

New Topic; with Inbox inspiration

Menus, Buttons and Material Icons

Why build "another" Material based theme?

Yep. There's already a really cool Material Stock theme for Discourse available. It's a bit different in places, and even includes a DARK mode.

Our forum has been running it's own Material theme for some time. We've finally wrapped this up into the new Discourse Theme format for distribution. Plus as we use the theme as the foundation for some other Discourse related projects we need something within our immediate control.

Overall i think the only way we can describe the visual differences is that ours is more Material; covers more elements in the style guide, more accurately. That said, whether you like one or the other will probably boil down to personal preference -- we make a few opinionated choices with respect to certain elements.

For reference, the theme is similar in approach to the Daemonite Material for Bootstrap 4 project:

While Discourse is not Bootstrap-based, we do adhere to the same Material principals advocated in that design project.

You can see the theme running live at our Labs forum:

Enjoy!

How to change the default view (for homepage)

@nixie wrote:

Hi,

I'm trying to change the default view for the homepage.
Currently, its showing: Categories on left side and latest posts on the right side.

I remember seeing an option to change the default view.
My discourse site is a pretty new site (like max 3 months old).
I'm guessing - after the new updates - its no more there.
Because I'm pretty sure it was there before. It was letting me select the default view.

ALSO - before starting this new thread, I've searched the entire meta site and also Google trying to find info regarding this. But I couldn't really find anything regarding this. So, had to start a new thread for this.

Someone - please assist me.
How to change the default view.
I'd like the "latest" page to be the default view for both mobile+desktop.

On Android, discourse sometimes displays the wrong images when navigating through multiple images in a post (in the screen layover that pops up when tapping an image).

In this post, for example, I get several images from the stock material theme instead of the daemonite ones included in the post:

Sorry, don't have time for a screen cast.

Integrating discourse forum with private club membership site built on Wordpress

@JamesRiall wrote:

I help run a members sports club of about 400 people. We have a site built on Wordpress with a private membership managed on Wordpress once annual fees have been paid. At the moment we have a wordpress forum, but it has died since our new wordpress site was built due to the lack of functionality and poor mobile performance. We want to look at building a new forum with Discourse, but we're having trouble finding out if it's possible to integrate it with the Wordpress membership management option - we want members to automatically have access to the Discourse forum and also for members to have forum access revoked if they are no longer members of the club.

Is this kind of integration possible? I really don't want to have to manage membership by adding and removing members manually.

Send rejection email for unrecognised errors

$

@LeoMcA wrote:

Yesterday we had an email to Discourse which errored out while processing with:

Unrecognized error type (RuntimeError: ) when processing incoming email

We only found out about this because the user looked on the site for their reply, couldn't find it, and alerted me. While it did appear in the logs, I don't check them particularly regularly.

The simplest 'solution' to this I see is sending a rejection message to users if there's been any error during processing, telling them to try again or alert an admin.

Looking at the source, it seems like not sending a message when there's an unrecognised error is intentional:

While I understand not giving specific information about the error isn't really possible, Discourse should at least let the user know their email hasn't been posted so they don't naively assume it has.

Bulk deactivation of inactive users

I migrated about 250 users that I'd now like to mark as inactive because they haven't visited the forum in quite some time. Is there a way to bulk deactivate users with a 'last seen' date prior to some date?

My goal is to prevent emails from sending to these users. I think deactivation is the correct status because it would allow those users to re-activate if they want - correct?
