I want my CNAME to be forums and my site IP is 162.243.12.227. How would I do this? Is there a special domain I need to point to? Because pointing to the IP isn't working for me.

POP3 polling stopped working

@brianmcdonald wrote:

Hi all, I had been using the email-in and reply-by-email features and they were working well for a few months until they suddenly stopped working.

I suspected that the polling period was too frequent and google may have blocked my install.
I reset the email settings, created a new google apps email and double checked the "allow less-secure apps settings" etc but to no avail.

My problem is now that when I re-click pop3 polling enabled it gives an error "POP3 authentication failed. Please verify your pop3 credentials." even though the credentials are correct and SSL is enabled.

Any ideas on what may be the problem? I tested pop3 polling from my laptop(not the discourse server yet) and it accepted the polling without any problem which makes me suspect that the settings I place in the admin settings section are not being applied properly. Any support would be much appreciated.

Abbreviations and acronyms plugin

$

@BlackSheep wrote:

I participate in a community where there are enthusiasts with lots of knowledge and newbies with not that much knowledge. It has become a habit that experts use lots of acronyms and abbreviations to refer to common terms, or famous webpages or to name known brands in their field of expertise, sometimes they use only initials when referring to famous people in the field, etc. This is not a problem for the oldest participants in the community, but some new people are having a hard time reading some posts, so the admins have been asked to create a plugin that automatically creates a tooltip for the most common acronyms.

This plugin does so. It automatically surrounds some (configurable) words with an <abbr>...</abbr> tag so a tooltip appears when hovering the mouse over the word.

This way IMMO becomes IMMO, YMMV becomes YMMV, R&B becomes R&B, etc

It is a very simple plugin, you can add more abbreviations through the admin panel.

Here is the code:

https://github.com/PoloGT/abbreviation-discourse-plugin.git

Any advice to improve the plugin will be welcome

Unlisted option on creation of a new topic

Is there a way to specify that a topic should be unlisted on creation?

Otherwise, if somebody subscribes to a category, they get a notification, even if I quickly unlist a topic after creation.

If not, what's a workaround? Create a topic in Staff, make it unlisted, then move it to the target category?

Can sub-forums of the same instance split up and move to new independent servers (or discourse instances)?

Hi there,

We are about to move a few forum/mailing lists to discourse. There would be one master project that gathers a handful of dedicated discourse instances, all sharing the same interface and contributing to badges/credits for the users.

If one day the main project would fall apart, would it be possible to separate and move the sub-forums to new independent servers (or discourse instances)?

Thanks for your support

I have an issue where some emails include the original mail body when using reply to. However these happen very rarely and traffic on our incoming discourse email addresses is high.

So my question is there a way to see past emails after they're posted?

admin/email/received has a fair amount of info but not the original body.

SSL Not working with ServerPilot

I am using ServerPilot.io to setup my server and to somewhat manage it. If I have SSL disabled, I can access the site using its port I specificed. If its enabled, I get a connection refused. I current have 6500:80 and 6550:443. Neither one of them work currently.

I have the ssl key and crt in the /shared/ssl folder.

With ServerPilot.io, it sets up nginx and apache. It uses nginx as the reverse proxy and main server but uses apache with php-fpm to server up php and static pages.

Unable to build tests - encoding "UTF8" does not match locale "en_US"

@gscholtes wrote:

I have followed the instructions here to set up a VM to begin developing with Discourse. No problems so far, am able to connect to localhost:4000 with no warnings and all.

To try to run the test suite, I did

rake db:test:prepare

which yields

rake aborted!
ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid: PG::InvalidParameterValue: ERROR: encoding "UTF8" does not match locale "en_US"

PG::InvalidParameterValue: ERROR: encoding "UTF8" does not match locale "en_US"
DETAIL: The chosen LC_CTYPE setting requires encoding "LATIN1".

I run psql -l and see the following output

                                       List of databases
         Name          |  Owner   | Encoding |  Collate   |   Ctype    |   Access privileges

 template1             | postgres | LATIN1   | en_US      | en_US      | =c/postgres          +
                       |          |          |            |            | postgres=CTc/postgres
 vagrant               | postgres | LATIN1   | en_US      | en_US      |
(5 rows)

I tried to manually create the test database with UTF8 encoding, set the Ctypes manually, walk through the other troubleshooting steps, look at similar issues throughout meta.discourse, and even toss out the VM and doing a fresh vagrant VM install, etc. So far no luck.

Any ideas how to resolve this encoding issue?

Docker networking problems on reboot

@andybalholm wrote:

When we reboot our server, it seems like our Discourse container is unable to make outgoing network connections. We can access the Discourse site from outside just fine, but it can't send email notifications or check for updates. But after we we do service docker restart, it works fine. (Or rather, because of https://meta.discourse.org/t/runsv-hanging-on-docker-container-shutdown/36844, we need to do docker kill app and then service docker restart.)

My suspicion is that Docker is starting too early in the computer's boot sequence.

Not receiving emails when mentioned or when someone replies to a topic I created

@Isabelle_Paradis wrote:

I'm admin and I've been testing discourse before we send out actual invites to members.

As far as emails, it works. Test email works. It also works when I send out invites and passwords requests.

It doesn't work when someone mentioned someone else (yes 'Send an email notification even when the user is active by default.' is ON). And it doesn't work when someone else replies to my topic. I have email notification turned on for both mentions and topic reply for all my mock members including me.

Is there a setting that overrides this somewhere I haven't seen?

Thanks
